SAN JOSE, Calif. -- In its second major layoff this year, National Semiconductor Corp. on Tuesday (April 29) said that it would eliminate approximately 130 positions, primarily in product line and support functions.

The move follows a slowdown in the company's business. In the current fourth fiscal quarter, which ends May 25, National (Santa Clara, Calif.) expects to record approximately $10 million of charges primarily for severance.

National, which currently employs approximately 7,300 employees, is scheduled to announce its fourth quarter fiscal 2008 financial results and hold a conference call on June 5, at which time the company will also provide an outlook for the first quarter of fiscal 2009.

Hit by a slowdown in wireless, National lowered its sales outlook for the third quarter of fiscal 2008, ending Feb. 24.

Seeking to cut costs, National earlier this year disposed certain manufacturing equipment and reduced its staff by 200 jobs at its wafer fabrication facilities worldwide.
