Find out if you're eligible for extended unemployment benefits.
Twenty six weeks is the typical amount of time you are eligible to draw unemployment benefits—many states have this limit, but you may be able to apply for an extension due to high unemployment rates thanks to two federal programs. Emergency Unemployment Compensation and Extended Benefits are two ways the government offers relief to those who are still out of work by the time the 26-week cutoff has passed. These additional unemployment benefits are not automatic. Pennsylvania has specific procedures and requirements on claiming your additional unemployment claims.
In most states you must have an unemployment claim filed in May 2007 or later and you must have exhausted all regular unemployment claims. You may be entitled to an extra 20 weeks of unemployment with an additional 13 weeks possible under certain circumstances. Check with the Pennsylvania Unemployment Office to learn about and take advantage of any extended benefits should you need them.
