Make network connections by talking anything but business.
|
There’s a notion about developing business professional networks; sometimes the best way to foster them is to simply talk about anything but business. There are plenty of opportunities to talk shop with people who could become part of your network: trade shows, conventions, professional conferences and many related activities. But it’s also good to have times when you talk socially with your colleagues and forget about business altogether. There's a time to talk business and a time to be social. Knowing how to transition into social hour should be considered part of your professional skill set.
People who can’t relax and talk about non-business topics are perceived as being uninterested in people for their own sake. That’s a bad impression to convey even if you don’t feel you have much in common with your business associates. Keep trying to find common ground with the people you want to network with—sooner or later you’ll discover you have something in common with them and you can bond over that shared interest. Without feeling a personal connection, it’s often difficult to get the most important aspect of any business relationship moving—trust.
