When you're looking for your first Philly job, you'll discover there are two kinds of first job interview situations. One is your very first job interview ever, a nerve-wracking experience to be sure. The second kind of “first job interview” is when you have your first encounter with a new company—the sort of meeting that should lead to a second interview if all goes well. If all goes even better, you could be hired on the strength of that first interview, but in many cases a second interview is required to hammer out the fine details.
What should you expect in your first interview? Regardless of whether it’s your very first interview ever or if it’s just your first interview with that particular company, expect plenty of probing questions. Some interviewers open the meeting by saying, "Tell me about yourself." If you're not expecting that, it can catch you off guard; be prepared for it and you'll have no problem giving a confident answer and a good first impression.
“What makes you think you are a good fit for our company?” is really the bottom line regardless of what questions the interviewer actually asks. Are you ready to answer? Think about the answer you'll give before you walk into the interview, but don't give a rehearsed reply to the question—instead, be honest and spontaneous. A good interviewer can tell the difference.
