Professional Business Dress: How To Dress in Casual Work Environments

Posted By: Staff Editor In: Business Professional
Staying professional in a casual work environment.
How can you evaluate your wardrobe to decide what’s best for your new Philly job? If you struggle to choose professional business dress because your workplace is a more casual environment than other jobs you’ve held, there are a few guidelines you can follow to ensure you fit in with the other women business professionals in your building.

Avoid clothes with slogans or other writing beyond the label. "Bumper sticker politics" and other statements aren't professional, and it's best to avoid offending a potential client or customer even with seemingly harmless fashion statements. Backless fashions in the workplace are questionable, and you should definitely avoid any look that conveys the shabby chic aesthetic. Even if that style is tolerated (or even encouraged) in the workplace, you may find people’s perceptions of you not to your liking as a new hire. Best advice? Play it safe in the workplace. Be hip, but not too hip--casual but never too casual at least until you’ve been on the job long enough to know what’s acceptable.
